Su creación ‘accidental’, por parte de científicos neerlandeses el año pasado, alarmó tanto a EE.UU. que el Consejo Asesor de Ciencias y Bioseguridad Nacional norteamericano recomendó incluso que el informe sobre su estudio se publicara sin «métodos o detalles”, por el temor de que los terroristas pudieran utilizarlo en las armas biológicas. «El miedo es que si se crea algo tan mortal y se convierte en una pandemia mundial, la mortalidad y el costo para el planeta podrían ser enormes”, advirtió entonces la Casa Blanca.

Los periodistas, por su parte, instaron a los investigadores a destruir los resultados de su trabajo, ofreciendo como alternativa salvar tan solo algunas pruebas del virus y conservarlas en varios laboratorios bajo fuerte custodia.
