Los equipos de vacunación contra la polio en Pakistánhan vuelto a ser blanco de ataques. Dos trabajadores han muerto este jueves al explotar una bomba al paso de la motocicleta en la que viajaban en una zona tribal del noroeste del país, según ha informado a la agencia Efe una fuente oficial.

Este nuevo atentado contra la campaña de inmunización tuvo lugar poco antes del mediodía en la aldea de Malikhel y fue perpetrado con un artefacto accionado por control remoto, según un funcionario de la región tribal de Khurram, donde ocurrió el ataque. Los muertos son dos hombres de alrededor de treinta años, según ha detallado un funcionario del organismo de coordinación de las áreas tribales.

Un responsable del equipo de vacunación en la zona, Javed Alí, ha precisado a la cadena Geo que los dos fallecidos llevaban días visitando localidades que por su difícil acceso no habían sido cubiertas por la campaña de tres días que acabó el pasado miércoles.

Al Khurram en una de las siete áreas tribales paquistaníes, semi-autónomas, consideradas los principales bastiones de los rebeldes islamistas talibanes y grupos vinculados a Al Qaeda. También son el escenario de sangrientos enfrentamientos sectarios entre chiíes y suníes.

Más de una decena de muertos en un mes

En poco más de un mes ya han sido asesinados más de una decena de vacunadores en diferentes puntos de Pakistán. El pasado martes, además, un ataque contra un puesto de vacunación en la localidad noroccidental de Swabi acabó con la vida de un policíae hirió a una empleada de sanidad.

El grueso de las muertes se produjeron en una ola de ataques que tuvo lugar a mediados de diciembre, cuando nueve trabajadores de los equipos de inmunización contra la polio fueron asesinados en el noroeste y el sur de Pakistán en un intervalo de 48 horas. La ONU decidió entonces suspender la campaña al no poder garantizar la seguridad de su personal, pero muchos trabajadores desafiaron la advertencia y siguieron desarrollando su labor.

La polio, una enfermedad endémica

Pakistán es el único país junto a Afganistán y Nigeria en el que la polio es aún endémica y las autoridades locales realizan junto a agencias internacionales un importante esfuerzo para inmunizar a todos los niños menores de cinco años del país.

Según el organismo oficial que coordina la lucha contra esta enfermedad, cada año se realizan cuatro campañas nacionales de varios días de duración en las que reciben la vacuna unos 34 millones de niños. En 2011 se registraron en Pakistán 198 casos, mientras que el año pasado hubo más de medio centenar, según cifras oficiales.

Desde 1994, Pakistán ha logrado reducir el número de casos de poliomelitis de 20.000 a 56 en 2012, según el gobierno de Islamabad.
