La reciente filtración sobre la vigilancia total de comunicación por parte de las agencias secretas estadounidenses es la última de una serie de revelaciones que ha visto el país en las últimas décadas. Recordemos las más impactantes.

Guerra de Vietnam

Como primera filtración sensacional de los secretos gubernamentales en EE.UU. se puede considerar la publicación de los llamados ‘papeles del Pentágono’ (‘The Pentagon Papers’) en 1971, en plena Guerra de Vietnam.

El 13 de junio de 1971 la prensa estadounidense reveló: ‘Relaciones Estados Unidos-Vietnam, 1945-1967: un informe realizado por el Departamento de Defensa’, que demostró, entre otras cosas, que la contienda había sido planeada desde hacía tiempo y que el Gobierno de Estados Unidos, así como los presidentes (Richard Nixon, y el anterior ocupante de la Casa Blanca, Lyndon Johnson) engañaron a la opinión pública respecto a lo que ocurría en ese conflicto bélico.

El hombre que proporcionó estos documentos ultrasecretos fue Daniel Ellsberg, que en aquel momento era analista de inteligencia del Departamento de Estado empleado por el Pentágono.

Ellsberg descubrió que la invasión de Vietnam se realizó a partir de una gran mentira convertida en ‘noticia’ por la propaganda de guerra: el inexistente ataque de lanchas torpederas norvietnamitas a unos navíos blindados de la US Navy «en patrullaje de rutina» por el golfo de Tonkin, en 1964, que tuvo como respuesta real los salvajes bombardeos contra los vietnamitas del norte y la invasión del sur.

Ellsberg copió los documentos y se los ofreció a la prensa.

Aquella revelación provocó un gran escándalo y contribuyó a la posterior decisión del Gobierno de cesar el apoyo al Sur y retirar las tropas del país.

Ellsberg se enfrentaba a 116 años de prisión por divulgar secretos de Estado pero fue exculpado debido a la presión de la opinión pública y ante la ilegalidad de las pruebas presentadas contra él, obtenidas mediante ‘pinchazos’.

Las autoridades publicaron ‘los papeles del Pentágono’ completamente solo 30 años después. Ellsberg se mantiene como activista político y ha declarado su apoyo al fundador de WikiLeaks Julian Assange y al último filtrador, Edward Snowden.

Republicanos contra demócratas

El 17 de junio de 1972 (4 meses antes de las elecciones presidenciales en las cuales Nixon fue reelegido), en la sede del Partido Demócrata, el Hotel Watergate, fueron detenidos 5 personas que pertenecían al comité de Nixon.

Estos individuos recopilaban datos sobre el partido opositor e instalaban dispositivos de escucha. Tras la posterior investigación pública quedaron al descubierto varios abusos durante la campaña presidencial, entre ellos espionaje político, dispositivos ilegales de escucha y otros.

Venganza ciega

En 2003 el público estadounidense fue testigo de un suceso único en la historia del país. En un esfuerzo de proteger la reputación del presidente el Gobierno los servicios secretos se dedicaron a la persecución de un crítico, hasta tal medida, que expuso a varios agentes de la CIA.

En enero del 2003 George W. Bush aseguró en su discurso sobre el estado de la Unión que Irak había intentado adquirir material nuclear en África, una afirmación que la Casa Blanca utilizaría para invadir a Irak en marzo aquel año, como pruebas del desarrollo de armas de destrucción masiva.

Ya comenzada la guerra, el ex diplomático estadounidense Joseph Wilson escribió varios artículos para ‘The New York Times’ en los que aseguró que había viajado a Níger por encargo de la CIA para investigar el asunto y concluyó que no existían pruebas para afirmar que el derrocado presidente Saddam Hussein había intentado comprar uranio en el país africano. Wilson criticó a EE.UU. por manipular la información de inteligencia para justificar la invasión a Irak.

En julio del 2003 el periodista Rober Novak destapó la caja de Pandora al publicar en su columna de ‘The Washington Post’ un artículo con críticas a Wilson, mencionando que su esposa Valerie Plame era agente de la CIA.

La revelación fue un golpe para una parte significativa de la red de agentes en África que contactaban con Plame.

En 2007 Lewis Libby, el jefe de Gabinete del vicepresidente Dick Cheney, fue sentenciado a dos años y medio de cárcel por mentir y obstruir a la Justicia en la investigación de este caso.

Bush lo eximió posteriormente de la pena de prisión, aunque mantuvo la multa de 250.000 dólares que le impuso el juez.

Tanto la ex espía como su marido, Joseph Wilson, sostienen que la divulgación de su identidad fue producto de una «venganza» de la Casa Blanca, que habría buscado de esa forma castigar a Wilson por su actitud crítica con la Guerra de Irak.

Científicos que ‘sobrecalentaron’ la Tierra

En noviembre del 2009 un grupo de ‘hackers’ publicaron correos electrónicos y archivos interceptados a la Unidad de Investigación sobre Clima de la Universidad de East Anglia. De los materiales se pudo concluir que los científicos manipulaban los datos sobre el calentamiento global.

En su correspondencia se consideraban trucos para enmascarar los gráficos en los que en ciertos años la temperatura no había crecido o que incluso había bajado.

Asimismo discutían cómo poner pegas a los críticos de la teoría del calentamiento global u obstaculizar su acceso a los datos originales.

El escándalo, nombrado ‘Climategate’, generó una polémica sobre la credibilidad de la teoría del calentamiento global.

Pero la filtración más destacada de los últimos años fue la publicación por parte del portal WikiLeaks de archivos secretos de Estados Unidos sobre la Guerra en Afganistán e Irak, cables diplomáticos y el vídeo ´Asesinato Colateral´, de un ataque lanzado desde un helicóptero estadounidense que dejó más de 10 civiles muertos en Bagdad.

El soldado Bradley Manning, quien filtró los materiales, está siendo juzgado, acusado de 22 cargos y se enfrenta a cadena perpetua o a la pena capital.

El fundador de WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, se encuentra refugiado en la Embajada de Ecuador en Londres tras ser detenido y liberado con compromiso de no salir en la capital británica en respuesta a la solicitud de la Justica sueca que lo acusa de delitos sexuales.
